2017 NY Tech Summit; a Cabling Guy's Perspective

2017 NY Tech Summit; a Cabling Guy's Perspective

Posted on 06/16/2017

When guests walk into the Turning Stone Casino for NY Tech Summit, their first impression (I asked many) is that it is well organized, comfortable and everyone is accommodating (I should also mention that everyone raves about the food, especially the breakfast…more on that later!).  The event seems to run seamlessly.  Why?  You know the answer – preparation!  I would not be surprised if planning for  NY Tech Summit 2018  has already started, mere days after the close of the 2017 event.

So what does this have to do with cabling?

I’ll get there, I promise…

My time spent at the show consists of talking with as many people as I can.  I really enjoy discussing the trends, challenges and successes in the ever changing world of Information Technology. These conversations give me great content for my video series, Respect Layer One®.NYTS 2017

One theme that is always common in a conversation is the amount of projects/workload that organizations are managing.  Things seem to always move at a hectic place.

Planning, design assistance and preparation are critical.  How can you plan and prepare when things are always hectic?  Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t, but you always should.

This is where I tie into cabling.  Not planning when new hardware is purchased usually results in a poorly cabled finished product.  “Odds and ends” cables are used instead of a well-planned, well thought out deployment of top performance fiber optic cables.  The cabling has become an afterthought, and it shows! I suggest you read: “Quality vs. Cost: The Treat of Low-Cost Cabling by my colleague Michael Palmer to get a good understanding of how serious an issue tic can be.

Do yourself a favor, next time you and your team are working at a breakneck speed to move a hardware install forward, pump the brakes at the planning stage and consider your cabling!

Now, as promised, more on that delicious breakfast!

This is a great time to network. It’s a great time to come out and see what the new products are… I find this very informative.
