Syracuse NY – Budgets, security, communications, and the cloud were the four most prevalent topics on the minds of IT professionals surveyed at the 14th annual NY Tech Summit, this past June.

“The feedback from survey participants gives us a good indication of the challenges IT professionals are facing throughout our industry this year,” said Renee Duffy, conference producer and vice president of marketing for TERACAI and CXtec, presenting sponsors of NY Tech Summit. “This information allows NY Tech Summit to be a valuable, thought-provoking event year after year for attendees and exhibitors alike.”

Battling budget constraints and costs

IT professionals are increasingly tasked with meeting the challenge of finding solutions within the constraints of their budget.

  • 42% of respondents indicated their organization’s top concern was finding ways to deal with budget constraints.
  • 50% revealed the cost of hardware was the most important factor when working with an IT provider.
  • 85% noted their company will spend up to 50% of its budget on such hardware as routing and switching equipment, so finding a cost-effective solution is imperative.
  • 40% also indicated that finding a hardware vendor that is easy to work with is important to them.

Survey participants revealed their organizations are combating budget constraints and cost concerns by looking to save money on their maintenance program.

  • 70% indicated their company has a third-party maintenance program in place.
  • 88% revealed that up to half of their company’s budget is spent on maintenance.

Security always a concern

A new security-related question this year focused on a respondent’s IT asset disposition (ITAD) program.

  • 57% indicated their company has an ITAD process in place.
  • 57% signified the biggest concern was the security of their data when decommissioning their equipment.

In 2017, cybersecurity was a big concern among those IT professionals surveyed. This year, respondents were asked how prepared they felt their organization was in dealing with a cybersecurity attack?

  • 35% indicated their company is adequately prepared for an attack
  • 25% indicated their company was strongly prepared.
  • 10% said their company was fully prepared.
  • 85% indicated that up to half their company’s budget is spent on security-related products.

Communication is key

Communication is a critical component in driving business success, whether it’s dealing with an internal or external audience. Finding ways for implementing effective two-way communication continues to be a critical obstacle to overcome in order to be successful.

  • 35% identified a lack of communication in the workplace as a common problem.

Managed services at your service

Managed services provide faster problem resolution and improved service levels for key business applications, enabling you to better meet business requirements.

  • 80% of respondents indicated their organization relies upon the use of managed services at least half the time during the year.

Moving to the cloud

Moving data to the cloud was the top technology trend being adopted by respondents this year.

  • 20% indicated their company has from 51-100% of their infrastructure in the cloud.
  • 80% indicated their company has up to 50% of its infrastructure currently in the cloud.
  • 90% indicated their organization spends up to half its budget on software-related products.
